CS Kipchumba Murkomen extends security operation in Marsabit’s 13 trouble spots for 30 more days

The extension was made under Section 106(6) of the National Police Service Act, 2011, and follows consultations with the National Security Council.

The government has extended the declaration of parts of Marsabit County as security-disturbed and dangerous, following continued insecurity in the region.

In a gazette notice dated July 10, 2025, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced that the declaration made on May 9, 2025, will remain in force for another thirty days, starting July 11, 2025, at 6:30 p.m.

The extension was made under Section 106(6) of the National Police Service Act, 2011, and follows consultations with the National Security Council.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 106 (6) of the National Police Service Act, 2011, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, in consultation with the National

Security Council, extends the declaration made on May 9, 2025, declaring parts of Marsabit County as security disturbed and dangerous,” read the notice.

The affected 13 areas include Hillo Gorgora, Hillo Orofa, Hillo Walkite, Hillo Tanzania, Hillo Irress Abamartille, Hillo Gootu, Hillo Tessum Qalicha, Hillo Karray, Hillo Hudda, Hillo Qoranjido, Hillo Irress Shindia, Hillo Rabaalee and Hillo Godde Haroressa.

According to the notice, the extension will be effective for 30 days from 11th July, unless withdrawn or further extended.

“This notice shall take effect on the July 11, 2025, as from 6.30 pm, for thirty (30) days and may, at any time be withdrawn or continued in force for such further period as the Cabinet Secretary may, in each case, by notice in the Gazette direct,” stated Murkomen.

The decision to extend the declaration comes amid ongoing efforts by security agencies to stabilise the area, which has experienced recurring incidents of violence, banditry, and intercommunal tension.

The 13 areas are located within the general Hillo area in the Dabel Location of the Golbo Division within Marsabit County.

Law enforcement officers from different security agencies continue to patrol the area. As it stands, access to and activities in the aforementioned areas are limited.
